My Best Friend that Sacrificed it All

What does Easter mean to you?

It can be easy to get caught up in the parties, egg hunts, candy and easter bunny pictures. Sometimes we can lose sight of what this holiday really means. A man sent to us by God, was beaten, betrayed, and humiliated for us. Wow. There are days I don’t feel worthy of such a sacrifice. It is incredible that God would have so much love to sacrifice his only son for humanity. Jesus knew his purpose, but sometimes I feel like I forget what he had to go through to save me from eternal emptiness.

In my mind, I can picture Jesus on the cross, but I get to walk with Him step by step as I read the gospels. It is difficult for me to read when I get to the part where Jesus is telling the disciples about his death. Even though I know that God had this all planned and Jesus was in on the plans, as a human it is hard to comprehend what is happening. How could he do this for me? Shoot, just writing this has me tearing up with emotion. It is overwhelming to see the love God has for us.

As always, God is moving and getting me ready for something. What that is I have no idea. I’m probably at the lowest of lows right now. I’m struggling with physical pain, anger, jealousy, loneliness, and I’m needing peace. My only solace is seeking my Father. During this Easter season, I keep thinking about what Jesus did so that I could rise out of the muck that is the world and be able to spend eternity in heaven. I’ve started to get back into the Word and seek out my best friend.

Have you ever thought of Jesus as your best friend? The Urban Dictionary defines Best Friend as, “Very special people in your life. They are the first people you think about when you make plans. They are the first people you go to when you need someone to talk to. You will call them up just to talk about nothing, or the most important things in your life. When you’re sad they will try their hardest to cheer you up. They give the best hugs in the world! They are the shoulder you cry on, because you know that they truly care about you. In most cases, they would take a bullet for you, because it would be too painful to watch you get hurt.”

Well I don’t know about you, but I want Jesus to be the first person I go to when I need to talk to someone. He’s always there ready and waiting for me to call. There’s nothing like the joy He gives, those hugs of comfort and that shoulder that has already bared many of my tears. And on top of all that, He loves me so much he sacrificed his own life to save mine.

During this weekend, as we think about what Jesus did for us, let us reflect on how much of us we are giving to Him. Are we just checking off a list or are we giving our all to our best friend who sacrificed it all? I have to ask myself everyday, am I reading my Bible to quickly get it done or to really hear God’s voice? Sometimes I just pray and then there are times this hot mess is on my knees before God asking for his help because I can’t do this on my own. Let’s face it, life is so much better when we have our best friend, Jesus, guiding the way.
